Niger's ruling junta announced a five-year transition to constitutional rule. This announcement was made during a signing ceremony for a new transition charter.
In 2023, Niger's junta staged a coup and ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. Similar to military leaders in Mali and Burkina Faso, they expelled French and other European forces. The junta has now turned to Russia for support against militant groups.
The five-year time frame aligns with recommendations from February. These recommendations came from a commission after national discussions.
