No law prohibits it – Domelevo wants monthly public disclosure of asset declarations

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo has a suggestion for the current Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu. He urges him to publish a monthly list of public officials who declare their assets.

Domelevo believes this would promote transparency. He stated, “There is nothing wrong with the Auditor General updating us month by month.” He emphasized that no law prevents this action. The details of the declarations would remain confidential.

He also called on President Mahama to set an example regarding asset declaration compliance. Domelevo noted that the Constitution requires public officials to declare their assets before taking office.

His comments come amid scrutiny of President Mahama’s administration for non-compliance with these laws. An investigation by The Fourth Estate found that 55 appointees missed the March 31 deadline for asset declarations.

The report revealed that 32 percent of newly appointed officials under Mahama have not complied with this requirement. This includes nine out of 55 ministers and deputy ministers, eight out of 32 presidential staffers, and 37 heads of state institutions appointed between January 15 and March 18, 2025.

Notable defaulters include Seth Terkper, Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, and Nathan Kofi Boakye. Others are Charles Kipo, Nana Yaa Jantuah, Ernest Brogya Gyamfi, Alhassan Suhuyini, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, John Dumelo, and Anthony Kwasi Sarpong from the Ghana Revenue Authority.
