Supreme Court Dismisses Case Against Chief Justice Torkonoo’s Impeachment
The Supreme Court has dismissed another application to stop the impeachment process against Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
On May 21, the court ruled 4-1 that the application was baseless. The case was brought by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES).
Justices Baffoe-Bonnie, Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu, Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, and Henry Anthony Kwofie supported the majority decision. Justice Yaw Darko Asare dissented.
This is the second time the Supreme Court has rejected an injunction related to this impeachment process. The first case was filed by MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah.
CenCES argued that the impeachment process violated due process. They requested a halt to the work of a five-member committee investigating petitions against Torkornoo.
Counsel for CenCES, Jacob Acquah-Sampson, claimed President Mahama did not provide necessary documentation. This documentation was needed before setting up the committee and suspending Torkornoo.
Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem-Sai called the application speculative and abusive of court processes. He urged the court to dismiss it entirely.
