No mining in forests or rivers – Sam George takes firm stand on LI 2462

Minister Samuel Nartey George has called for the repeal of Legislative Instrument (LI 2462). This law currently allows mining in Ghana’s forest reserves.

In an interview with Naa Dedei Tettey on Morning Starr, he expressed his views. He believes LI should be completely scrapped, not amended.

George emphasized that no mining should occur in rivers or protected forests. He warned against political manipulation of environmental policies. “There must be absolutely no mining in river bodies or forest reserves,” he stated firmly.

He also condemned illegal mining activities. He insisted that political connections should not protect offenders from the law. “Illegal mining in water bodies and forest reserves is a criminal act,” he said.

His comments come amid criticism from environmental advocates and civil society groups. They are disappointed with the Mahama administration's decision to amend LI 2462 instead of scrapping it entirely.

As pressure mounts, the debate over Ghana’s mining laws intensifies. Sam George’s remarks have strengthened calls for urgent action on this issue.
