The Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, has issued a warning. He cautioned religious leaders and individuals against defacing the new chip-embedded passports. This is being done in hopes of spiritual intervention for travel abroad.
Ablakwa explained that anointing the passport could compromise its security features. He suggested that men of God should anoint other parts of the body instead. The new Ghana passport should be left untouched.
At a launch event in Accra, Ablakwa expressed his alarm over recent practices. He noted people were sending their passports for anointing oil before visa interviews. He urged everyone to refrain from this practice, stating it would render the passport ineffective.
He highlighted that the new chip-embedded passports have 175 security features. In contrast, the old passports only had 32 features. The new system also includes a 24-hour processing service and courier delivery to applicants’ homes.
Ablakwa mentioned that applicants can expect their new passports within 15 days. This initiative represents a collaborative effort to enhance security standards in line with ICAO guidelines.
The incorporation of nanotechnology adds extra protection to the bio page of the passport. This upgrade increases overall security features significantly.
Additionally, the integration of Micro Frequency Identification Chips stores important data about each bearer. These e-passports meet international standards while reflecting Ghana’s cultural identity through iconic Adinkra symbols.
In summary, Ablakwa emphasized not to anoint or alter the new chip-embedded passports for any reason.
