Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu praised the new National Free Sanitary Pads initiative. He called it a “terminal end” to the silent suffering of many schoolgirls during menstruation.
Mr. Iddrisu spoke at the launch event at the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools in Mamprobi, Accra. He highlighted the social and emotional toll menstruation has on girls. Many lack access to sanitary products in basic and secondary schools.
He stated, “Today’s milestone is to say a terminal end to the unbearable emotional trauma.” He emphasized that female students often struggle without proper sanitary protection.
President John Dramani Mahama attended the event. Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged his role in making this policy possible. He noted that it helps Ghanaian girls attend school without interruptions.
“Excellency John Dramani Mahama says from today, you will give a terminal end to that strife,” he said. This initiative aims to ensure no girl misses school due to menstruation.
The program will distribute free sanitary pads to girls in public schools. It seeks to reduce absenteeism and promote menstrual hygiene across Ghana.
