Former Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has reassured his supporters. This comes after a US court ordered him to pay $18 million. The payment is for defamation against journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
Agyapong spoke at his campaign office in Shiashie on March 27. He expressed gratitude for the warm welcome he and his wife received. He said, “Thank you for the wonderful welcome. It inspires me to continue speaking for the voiceless.”
He urged his followers not to worry about the court's decision. He emphasized that challenges come with standing up for the truth. “Anyone who speaks the truth will face challenges,” he stated.
Agyapong believes this ordeal has made him a better person. He vowed to keep fighting and defending the truth.
In background news, Anas won a legal victory in the US. An Essex County jury awarded him $18 million in damages against Agyapong. Legal scholar Professor Kwaku Azar shared this update on Facebook.
Agyapong has already filed for a remittitur, asking the court to reduce damages awarded. This ruling contrasts sharply with a 2023 decision in Ghana. An Accra High Court dismissed a similar lawsuit from Anas.
Justice Eric Baah presided over that case and acknowledged potential defamation by Agyapong. However, he ruled that Anas failed to prove his claims.
The case began on May 29, 2018, when Agyapong attacked Anas during an Adom TV interview. He called Anas “a blackmailer, corrupt, an extortionist, and evil.”
Following this attack, Agyapong released materials aimed at discrediting Anas after his corruption exposés. Initially, Anas sought GH¢25 million in aggravated damages in Ghana but lost his case.
