The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a directive to all regional directors. They must stop charging fees for using washrooms in hospitals immediately.
In a letter dated April 16, 2025, Acting Director-General Prof. Samuel Kaba Akioryea emphasized this point. He stated that washrooms are essential for patient and visitor comfort.
The letter noted that clean and comfortable washrooms help prevent infections. They also improve the perception of patient care quality and increase satisfaction.
The GHS called the practice of charging toilet fees "exploitation." Facility heads who do not comply with this directive will face sanctions.
Prof. Akioryea stressed that failure to adhere to this directive will lead to consequences.
