Nothing outside merit and integrity - Atuguba on recommendations for SC judges

Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has shared his views on President John Mahama’s new nominations for the Supreme Court.

He expressed partial support but does not fully endorse the nominations. He believes that long service alone should not qualify someone for the Supreme Court.

In an interview on JoyNews’ The Pulse, he emphasized the need for balance and inclusivity in judicial appointments.

Justice Atuguba stated that the Supreme Court should represent various sectors. This includes members from the Ghana Bar Association, academia, and the Court of Appeal.

He pointed out a lack of representation from these groups. “I want the Court to be balanced,” he said.

He also highlighted that appointees must possess high merit, experience, and integrity.

“To build a sound country, apply soundness to decisions in all sectors,” he noted.

Justice Atuguba urged authorities to conduct thorough background checks before confirming judicial appointments.

“It’s easy to assess competence through their judgments,” he explained. He added that longevity in service is not enough for qualification.
