Nothing will break in Ghana if CJ remains at post - Ahiagbah

Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has issued a warning. He cautioned President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against interfering with the judiciary.

Ahiagbah stated that trying to remove the Chief Justice could destabilize Ghana’s democracy. He spoke on JoyNews' The Pulse on Monday, May 5. He said, “Nothing will break in this country if Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo remains.”

He added, “If the President cannot strengthen the judiciary, he should leave it alone.” Ahiagbah accused the NDC of exploiting weaknesses in the legal system. He claimed they are running a politically motivated campaign against the Chief Justice.

According to him, this move is not based on any legal breach. Instead, it is a calculated political agenda disguised as a legal process. “This whole agenda has been cooked,” he said. “The law is only being used to give effect to their politics.”

He emphasized that Ghana’s democracy relies on three equal branches: executive, legislature, and judiciary. Each branch checks the others. Undermining one branch threatens the entire system.

“If you touch the judiciary, you unravel democracy,” he asserted. “The judiciary is the guardian of the rule of law.” Ahiagbah warned that any attempt to politically influence or remove the Chief Justice should be treated as taboo. It is a line that must not be crossed.
