Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, is seeking answers from Ghana’s security and legal institutions. He is concerned about the lack of action on traffickers involved in $500 million cocaine busts reported earlier this year.
On social media platform X, he praised recent anti-drug efforts by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC). However, he criticized the slow progress on larger cases that seem to have stalled.
“How far with the prosecution of the half a billion dollar cocaine busts?” he asked. He noted NACOC's commitment to preventing drug trafficking at ports but questioned what happened to prosecutions from earlier busts.
His comments followed news that NACOC intercepted a significant drug shipment at Swiss Port in Tema. On April 23, 2025, they seized 89.74 kilograms of suspected cocaine hidden in a cargo shipment bound for the Netherlands. Four suspects were arrested and are currently in custody as investigations continue.
NACOC stated that initial intelligence indicates this operation is part of a larger trafficking network. While praising this recent success, Hon. Fordjour wondered why similar urgency has not been shown for previous large busts involving $350 million and $150 million worth of narcotics.
“There’s good news on prosecuting small busts of 89.74kg,” he said. “But when will suspects from the big busts be arrested? When will armed operatives storm their houses like before?”
He urged both NACOC and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to provide answers. He emphasized that high-profile individuals should not be shielded if involved.
“We all support zero tolerance for drug trafficking,” he added. “Big busts must be prosecuted just as quickly as small ones.”
