Nurture Nature Foundation calls for urgent action to address flood crisis in Accra

Nurture Nature Foundation has issued an urgent call for action. This follows severe flooding in Accra and other parts of Ghana. They urge government authorities, urban planners, developers, and citizens to protect natural buffer zones. They also want a restructured urban transportation system to create flood-resilient cities.

The Foundation highlighted the damage caused by heavy rains. Repeated flooding has harmed homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. Tragically, lives have been lost as well. They noted that these floods reveal weaknesses in urban planning and environmental management. Unchecked encroachment on waterways and poor drainage systems are major issues.

Nurture Nature Foundation advocates for restoring riparian buffer zones. These are natural areas along rivers and streams that help prevent floods. Buffer zones absorb excess rainwater and reduce surface runoff. They also prevent soil erosion and improve water quality. Additionally, they can support sustainable water transport during floods.

The Foundation calls for restructuring Accra’s transport infrastructure. This includes building elevated roadways in flood-prone areas. Integrated drainage systems should be developed too. They also suggest promoting alternative transport modes like water-based transit during rainy seasons. These measures will help minimize flood disruptions.

Peter Asiedu is the Executive Director of Nurture Nature Foundation. He believes the flood challenges present an opportunity for change. Restoring natural buffer zones can lead to a more resilient Accra. Rethinking city mobility can make it prosperous and sustainable too.

He emphasizes that now is the time to act for everyone’s benefit—people, economy, and environment.

Nurture Nature Foundation urges all stakeholders to unite for sustainable urban development practices. Protecting the environment will improve public safety and build climate-resilient cities.
