Nyaho-Tamakloe hails Mahama’s 120-day progress, demands tougher galamsey action

Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the NPP, praised President John Mahama. He acknowledged Mahama's progress on his 120-day social contract pledges to Ghanaians. However, he urged for stronger action against illegal mining.

Before the 2024 election, candidate Mahama promised 25 commitments for his first 120 days in office. These promises spanned various sectors: nine for the economy, four for governance reforms, seven for education and social welfare, three for national security and justice, and one each for the environment and tourism.

During the launch of his memoir on May 7, 2025, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe noted that Mahama had made significant progress on many pledges. Yet, he raised concerns about illegal mining, known as galamsey, and its environmental impact.

He stated that while Mahama has achieved much, he is unhappy with water body destruction. “His main target should be correcting the mess caused by mining in our forests,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe told TV3.

He also criticized the government's policy of deporting foreign nationals involved in illegal mining. He suggested that stricter legal actions should occur before any deportation.

“These individuals must face legal consequences in Ghana’s courts first,” he said. Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s remarks contribute to ongoing discussions about illegal mining's threat to Ghana’s forests and rivers.
