The recent LinkedIn “Future of Work” Report (2025) shows significant growth in AI jobs. From 2020 to 2024, postings for AI and related roles increased by 38%. This makes AI one of the fastest-growing job sectors globally.
AI skills are now essential in tech jobs. These include Data Science, Programming, Cybersecurity, and Cloud Computing. However, AI competencies are also important for HR specialists, project managers, designers, consultants, and analysts.
As AI technologies grow rapidly, developed societies must keep pace. Meanwhile, developing economies like those in Africa aim to bridge this gap. The African Union's Continental AI Strategy focuses on five key areas to enhance capabilities.
One focus area is improving infrastructure for energy and data centers. It also emphasizes building local talent and supporting relevant research. Although training capacities are still developing across Africa, demand remains high. Countries seek to use AI to improve healthcare, agriculture, education, and climate change.
Since 2023, OPIT (Open Institute of Technology) has been addressing the AI skills gap. This European-accredited online institution welcomes students from Africa and beyond. It offers world-class training in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Digital Business, and Cybersecurity.
OPIT aims to make higher education accessible worldwide at affordable costs. Students from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt can now access quality international education from home. This allows them to maintain their careers while pursuing advanced qualifications.
Riccardo Ocleppo is the founder of OPIT. He highlighted the institution’s role in meeting Africa’s tech talent demand. “Our mission is to provide a curriculum that addresses urgent tech skill needs,” he said.
With a faculty of 45 international professors, OPIT offers high-quality education at an affordable price. While serving professionals globally—students come from 78 countries—OPIT supports fast-growing tech ecosystems in Africa.
In 2025, OPIT plans to welcome more students from innovation hubs like Nigeria and Kenya. The ability to study remotely while working makes OPIT appealing for professionals.
Many African IT professionals have found success with OPIT's model. For example, Watson Ndethi enrolled in the MSc program in Responsible Artificial Intelligence last September. He had over a decade of experience before seeking international postgraduate education without leaving home.
Watson praised OPIT’s blended learning model: “It fits into my demanding work schedule.” This approach provides flexibility for working professionals across the continent.
OPIT continues expanding its reach as more professionals seek skill development opportunities. Last March marked its first graduation ceremony with 40 graduates from six continents completing their programs.
Based in Malta, OPIT serves a diverse student body from 78 countries with around 300 enrolled students currently. It offers EU-accredited degrees in computer science and related fields while focusing on practical education that integrates technology with real-world applications.
By bridging theory and practice effectively, OPIT prepares graduates for industry demands. Its student-first approach combines flexible online learning with interactive experiences like live lessons and quizzes.
Students benefit from personalized tutoring support available around the clock along with high-quality resources at their disposal.
