Davis Ansah Opoku, MP for Mpraeso, is known as OPK. He has responded to accusations of tribal prejudice. These accusations arose from a viral WhatsApp message. The message suggested he opposed a northern candidate for the NPP's flagbearer role in 2028.
Critics claimed this implied he was promoting tribalism within the party. In response, OPK issued a statement on social media. He called the claims misleading and taken out of context.
OPK described the incident as a "mischievous attempt" to misrepresent him. He stated, “This publication is not only false but also a gross misrepresentation.” He added that the suggestion he objected to a northerner as flagbearer is unfounded.
He explained his original comment was in response to Tamimu, a northerner. Tamimu questioned Hon. Bryan Acheampong’s candidacy based on regional succession logic. OPK cited President John Mahama to challenge this divisive argument.
“It was never an attack on northerners,” he clarified. “It was a rebuttal of a divisive claim made by one of their own.”
The MP emphasized his respect for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and other NPP contenders. He believes leadership should be based on merit and unity, not ethnicity.
He concluded by calling for political discourse focused on competence over tribal rhetoric. Every Ghanaian deserves the opportunity to serve, regardless of their origin.
