OSP vs Ofori-Atta: It is difficult to reconcile the letters from Mayo Clinic – Neurosurgeon

Dr. Hadi Mohammed, a neurosurgeon at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, doubts the medical reports about former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta's prostate cancer. He discussed this on JoyNews Newsfile on June 7.

Dr. Mohammed noted inconsistencies in the medical communications regarding Mr. Ofori-Atta's treatment. This raises questions about his long absence from Ghana.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently wanted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). He faces allegations of using public office for personal gain while serving under President Akufo-Addo.

Dr. Mohammed pointed out discrepancies in two medical letters about Mr. Ofori-Atta's condition. One letter indicated he would undergo surgery, while another mentioned an "MRI-guided biopsy."

He found it hard to reconcile these two letters and their timelines. Biopsies for prostate cancer are usually minor procedures done as outpatient care.

In Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, patients often go home the same day after a biopsy. This contrasts with the idea of a major surgery suggested by earlier communications.

Dr. Mohammed questioned why Mayo Clinic would delay a crucial biopsy if initial PSA levels were high. Quick results are essential to determine tumor aggressiveness.

He challenged the notion that treatment at Mayo Clinic indicates a lack of local capability. Dr. Mohammed asserted that Ghana is advanced in prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Ghanaian urologists have successfully treated high-level officials from various West African countries, including members of past and current governments.

Having treated some officials himself, Dr. Mohammed dismissed claims of superior care abroad for prostate cancer patients. He believes that nothing special is done at Mayo Clinic that isn't available in Ghana.

He emphasized that specialized oncology units in Ghana can provide advanced treatments like chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

Mr. Ofori-Atta's extended stay abroad has drawn public scrutiny, especially with the recent Red Notice re-issued by the OSP.
