The Chief Resident Engineer of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange project, Ing. Owusu Sekeyere Antwi, announced that phase II is suspended. This suspension is due to funding delays from unpaid contractor bills.
On Saturday, May 3, Ing. Antwi spoke to the media. He said only a few tasks remain, but construction has slowed down. This slowdown is caused by resource constraints.
He mentioned that over 20 million euros are owed in outstanding payments. Last year, the Minister of Finance made some payments not related to these debts. Therefore, they need to clarify how much is still owed to the contractor.
Concerns are growing about delays in key road projects nationwide. The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange is vital for reducing traffic congestion in Greater Accra Region. Contractors have asked the government for quick financial support to avoid further disruptions.
A parliamentary oversight committee plans to engage relevant ministries. Their goal is to resolve these issues and ensure timely project completion.
In another update, Ing. Kwabena Bempong confirmed delays on the Ofankor-Nsawam Road Project. This project has faced a 15-month delay and was initially set for July 2024 completion.
Now, it is expected to finish between mid-2025 and late 2025. Ing. Bempong cited two main challenges: compensating affected residents and relocating utility infrastructure along the route.
