Retired Colonel Festus Aboagye, a security analyst, has called on the government to urgently address the lack of regulation in Ghana’s mining sector.
His appeal follows a violent clash on January 18 between illegal miners and military personnel at AngloGold Ashanti's Obuasi Mine.
Speaking to Channel One News, Col. Aboagye criticized the government’s inaction, attributing it to political and partisan motives. He warned that unregulated mining has fostered lawlessness, increasing the risk of violence and instability.
“The mining sector, including river bodies and forest reserves, poses significant risks if left uncontrolled,” he stressed, urging swift government intervention to restore order.
Col. Aboagye emphasized that immediate action is needed to prevent further incidents and ensure sustainable operations in the sector.
