The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has strongly condemned the recent invasion of an abandoned AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi mine by illegal miners, which led to a violent clash with the military resulting in nine deaths and several injuries.
Describing the invasion as "unacceptable," Otumfuo emphasized that the law must be upheld and that individuals cannot take the law into their own hands, as was the case in the recent incident.
He noted that the community and the mining company are interconnected and that illegal activities disrupt both.
The Asantehene was briefed by a delegation from AngloGold Ashanti and highlighted the importance of ongoing security measures and policies being implemented to resolve tensions between small-scale miners and mining companies.
He is also awaiting a dialogue with the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry to address illegal mining nationwide.
