Nine people have been confirmed dead after a violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel in Obuasi.

The miners allegedly breached a security fence at an abandoned AngloGold Ashanti concession, leading to confrontation with security forces.

Four of the eight injured individuals remain in critical condition at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while four others have been discharged.

Ashanti regional minister-designate, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, visited the injured and families of the deceased, assuring thorough investigations and the government’s commitment to finding lasting solutions.

He urged the community to remain calm as efforts continue to prevent further violence and ensure peaceful coexistence between residents and mining companies.

Schools in Obuasi East and the municipality have been shut until peace is restored.
