Ofori-Atta’s legal team losing public sympathy - Prof Ansa-Asare

A former Director of the Ghana School of Law has issued a warning. He cautioned the legal team of Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister. They should stop antagonizing the public regarding the Special Prosecutor’s case.

Professor Kwaku Ansa-Asare spoke on Joy News’ PM Express on June 3. He expressed disappointment in how Ofori-Atta's lawyers are handling the situation. Their strategy is backfiring and angering the public, he said.

He noted that national patience with corruption is running thin. The legal team's approach is infuriating people and provoking outrage. It damages Ofori-Atta’s credibility and erodes any sympathy he might have had.

“This case tests Ghana's endurance in fighting corruption,” he stated. If Ofori-Atta is genuinely ill, he should provide credible medical documentation. This aligns with legal requirements under the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) law.

Prof Ansa-Asare emphasized that evidence must be produced if someone claims to be sick. “No one will drag an ill person through court without reason,” he added.

He believes that proper communication from the legal team is essential. Misleading information about Ofori-Atta’s health could create misunderstandings.

He clarified that he supports fair treatment for all accused individuals. However, public trust must be maintained through transparent processes.

“The legal team may not be approaching this matter effectively,” he warned. If he were advising them, he'd stress producing medical documents as required by law.

“Evidence cannot be ignored,” he concluded firmly.
