Lawyer Kwame Jantuah, a senior member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has made a statement about Ken Ofori-Atta. He believes the former Finance Minister is afraid of arrest upon returning to Ghana.
Jantuah suggested that Ofori-Atta's passport might be seized. He said, “Perhaps Ken Ofori-Atta is scared that if he returns to Ghana, his passport will be seized and that he’ll probably be placed under some form of arrest.”
His comments follow the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) rejecting Ofori-Atta's request for a virtual session. Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, stated that Ofori-Atta must appear in person.
Agyebeng emphasized, “This office has always requested his attendance. We are unwilling to waive it.” He added that if they could take statements remotely, they would have done so earlier.
The Special Prosecutor also mentioned initiating an INTERPOL red notice against Ofori-Atta. This could lead to international arrest and extradition.
He explained, “About 30 minutes before this brief, I triggered processes for the issuance of an INTERPOL red notice.” This notice aims to locate and provisionally arrest Ofori-Atta pending extradition.
The OSP has accused him of causing financial loss to the state in various dealings. These include issues related to the National Cathedral project and contracts with the Ghana Revenue Authority and other entities.
