Ofori-Atta too ill to return for OSP interrogation – Lawyer

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta cannot attend a meeting today. His lawyer, Frank Davies, stated that Ofori-Atta is ill. He is currently receiving medical treatment in the United States and cannot travel. The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has been informed and received medical documentation.

Davies mentioned that the legal team proposed a virtual interview. This suggestion complies with the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772). They submitted a formal request for remote engagement on May 27.

Ofori-Atta is willing to speak with the OSP via video call. “In this digital era, it’s possible,” he emphasized.

The OSP warned that not appearing today could label Ofori-Atta as a fugitive. This could lead to an INTERPOL Red Notice being issued against him.

Davies criticized the OSP's stance, saying it ignores his client’s health issues. He noted that this situation did not arise suddenly; the OSP was aware before charges were filed. “Why insist on physical presence when lawful alternatives exist?” he questioned.

Ofori-Atta faces five investigations related to his time under former President Nana Akufo-Addo. These include contracts with the Ghana Revenue Authority and issues surrounding the National Cathedral’s finances.

In February, the OSP declared him wanted after he missed an earlier invitation. He was later removed from this status after providing a return date. In March, he filed a case at the Human Rights Court regarding the OSP’s actions, with a ruling expected on June 18.

Davies insists that this matter is now in court and that the OSP has been notified properly. “We expect a formal response,” he said. “This can’t be handled through media commentary.”
