The Okada Riders Association emphasizes the importance of training for safety.
This statement follows a proposal from Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe. He suggested amending the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 LI 2180. The amendment would allow only those aged 25 and older to operate commercial motorcycles and tricycles. This is part of the government's plan to improve safety in the sector.
Solomon Akpanaba, the Public Relations Officer of the association, spoke to Citi News. He stated that training is crucial for promoting safety, not age limits. “We have always said that if you want discipline or fewer accidents, focus on rider training,” he said.
He added that an 18-year-old rider can make better decisions with proper training. For example, trained riders will know when to wait at traffic lights instead of rushing through them. Training helps young riders understand what is more important: patience or speed.
