Okada riders to wear uniforms, use trackers – Amaliba

The Acting Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has proposed strict regulations for commercial motorcycle operations, known as 'Okada.'

He spoke about these plans in an interview on TV3. The government aims to ensure order and safety in this sector.

Amaliba stated that Okada riders will wear uniforms for identification. They will also receive reflectors and specific helmets. Passengers must wear the same type of helmet for safety.

To regulate operations further, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) will issue special number plates and licenses for commercial motorcycles. The police will enforce these laws.

Okada riders must join unions instead of operating individually. This requirement will improve accountability and help identify those involved in illegal activities.

Amaliba explained that unions will have executives to manage members. If a rider commits a crime, authorities can approach the union for assistance.

Additionally, Okada motorcycles will have speed control gadgets and tracking systems. These tools aim to prevent reckless riding and ensure compliance with safety rules.

Amaliba mentioned that speed limits would be enforced through these gadgets. Each motorcycle will also have a tracker to monitor its movement.

These measures are essential if Okada operations are legalized. They aim to prevent lawlessness and reduce road accidents.
