Okomfo Anokye was born here, no doubt about that – Historian shuts down birthplace controversy

The first Okomfo Anokye Festival launched in Awukugua. Celebrated historian Anokye Frimpong Esq. spoke at the event. He addressed doubts about the birthplace of Okomfo Anokye.

Frimpong stated that the debate has gone on for too long. He believes it’s time for Ghanaians to settle this issue. “Okomfo Anokye was born in Awukugua,” he said. “There’s no need to keep dragging this.”

He acknowledged that Anokye lived in Denkyira and influenced Ashanti history. However, he emphasized that Awukugua is where Anokye's roots are.

Awukugua is preparing to host its first Okomfo Anokye Festival. The festival is organized by Awukuguaman and the Asanteman Council. It aims to honor the powerful priest revered across Ghana.

Okomfo Kwame Anokye Frimpong Kotobre, known as Okomfo Anokye, was a spiritual leader. He co-founded the Asante Empire in the 17th century. Legend says he was born holding strange items, indicating his divine calling.

Anokye is credited with calling down the Golden Stool from the sky. This act unified the Ashanti people and solidified their identity. As a high priest and advisor to King Osei Tutu, he helped build a powerful empire.

Anokye Frimpong believes celebrating this legacy is overdue. “We should have started this 100 years ago,” he said. “I’m glad it’s starting now — I want everyone involved.”
