Ghana is modernizing its passport system. Many citizens are asking if their current passports will still work. Do they need to change them right away?
Starting April 28, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue new chip-embedded passports. These passports have advanced security features and meet international travel standards. The application process is also streamlined.
What Happens to My Current Passport?
You don’t need to rush to get a new passport. Existing biometric passports remain valid until they expire, up to 2030. This follows International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules. You can continue using your current passport without issues.
What’s New with the Chip-Embedded Passport?
The new passports have enhanced security features. They include a microchip that stores your biometric data and photo. This makes them harder to counterfeit or alter.
The design celebrates Ghana’s heritage with Adinkra symbols like Fawohodie and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu. These symbols represent freedom, independence, democracy, and cooperation.
With these upgrades, Ghana's passports now fully comply with ICAO requirements.
How Do I Apply for the New Passport?
You can apply for the new passport now; you don’t need to wait for your old one to expire.
Applications are available online at www.passport.mfa.gov.gh.
Passport offices operate 24/7 for faster processing.
Regular service delivers your passport in 15 working days; expedited service takes just 5 days.
How Will I Receive My Passport?
Passports will be delivered to your home at no extra cost.
If you don’t have a fixed address, collect it at your nearest post office through Ghana Post.
You can track your application and delivery status online in real-time.
What Does It Cost?
Cabinet has proposed a fee reduction that surprises many:
The new application fee is GH₵350, down from GH₵500 (pending parliamentary approval).
Delivery and tracking services are free of charge.
Important Care Tips for the New Passport
Handle your new passport carefully due to its electronic chip:
Don’t bend it; avoid tight or curved spaces like back pockets.
Keep it dry; protect it from liquids and extreme heat.
Avoid stacking it with bank cards or other chip-enabled items inside the passport.
For Ghanaians Living Abroad
Embassies and high commissions worldwide can process applications for chip-embedded passports for citizens living overseas.
Why the Change?
Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa explains that reforms come from a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). This aims to digitize passport services, eliminate middlemen known as “goro boys,” and enhance transparency while creating jobs.
