The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has started its annual ban on drumming and noise-making. This ban began today, May 12, and will last until June 12.
The ban is part of the preparations for the Homowo Festival. This festival is an important cultural celebration for the Ga people.
In a statement from Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs, the AMA noted that all residents must comply. The ban applies to communities and institutions under its jurisdiction.
This enforcement aims to maintain peace and harmony during this cultural observance. Areas affected include the vicinity of the AMA Head Office, Gamashie, Ablekuma West, and parts of Kasoa.
The period is sacred for the Ga community. It is marked by spiritual reflection and solemnity.
“The ban represents a sacred period of solemnity,” the statement said. It emphasizes reflection and spiritual preparation for Homowo Festival.
Churches are required to hold services indoors without musical instruments. Loudspeakers cannot be used outside churches or during street evangelism.
The Ga Traditional Council (GTC) supports this directive. They have also placed a moratorium on funeral rites during this time.
The AMA urges tolerance among different religious and traditional groups. They ask everyone to avoid inflammatory or disrespectful comments during this period.
