Online blackmail and sextortion: Victims lose nearly GH¢500k in 4 months - CSA

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised concerns about online blackmail and sextortion. Victims lost nearly half a million Ghana cedis in the first four months of 2025.

Between January and April 2024, 155 cases were reported. These resulted in financial losses of GH¢103,663. Updated figures for January to April 2025 show a rise in cases. However, financial losses have dramatically increased to GH¢499,044.

The CSA noted that cybercriminals are using more sophisticated techniques. This trend has a deeper economic impact on victims.

Cybercriminals often create fake social media accounts with attractive photos. They pose as individuals seeking romantic relationships. Once trust is established, they initiate explicit video calls or request private photos.

These sessions are secretly recorded without the victim’s consent. The criminals then threaten to release the materials unless a ransom is paid, usually via mobile money. Even after payment, threats may continue or escalate.

Threat actors often move conversations to encrypted platforms like WhatsApp or Telegram. This reduces traceability and increases their control over victims.

The CSA stated that this trend causes psychological and financial burdens on victims. Many feel traumatized and uncertain about how to seek help. Others lose significant amounts of money trying to stop the blackmail.

Victims are urged to cease all communication with blackmailers immediately. Paying any ransom does not guarantee deletion of materials and can lead to further demands.

The CSA recommends preserving all evidence such as screenshots and messages. Victims should report incidents for investigation.

It is crucial to be vigilant when interacting with unknown individuals online. Be cautious of those who quickly steer conversations toward intimate exchanges.

Avoid sharing or storing nude or explicit content on any device. In addition to reporting to the CSA, victims should confide in trusted family members or seek support from counselors due to the emotional toll these crimes can inflict.
