Organised Labour in Ashanti Commemorates May Day

Various groups under Organised Labour in Ashanti Region held a May Day Parade yesterday. The theme was: “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders.”

Mr. Augustine Apambile Adongo, the Regional Secretary of TUC, spoke at Jubilee Park. He emphasized that this day honors workers' contributions to economic development. He noted that the theme highlights challenges faced by Ghanaian workers.

Mr. Adongo pointed out the growing gap between income and survival needs. He stated that the minimum wage of GHC19.97 for eight hours is insufficient. Additionally, he mentioned that the single spine salary structure offers only USD47.5 (GHC741) monthly.

This amount is below the international poverty line of USD58.05. Both minimum wage earners and mainstream workers struggle with living costs.

Richard Ofori Agyemang, Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), praised Organised Labour's contributions to national development. He acknowledged that there are significant challenges ahead.

He assured attendees that he and the Regional Minister aim to reset Kumasi for sustainable growth. The Mayor highlighted that fair compensation and decent working conditions are vital for national progress.

He urged workers to collaborate with the government to create wealth for all. The Mayor also mentioned that John Dramani Mahama's administration is committed to restructuring pay policies.

He stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, institutions, and Organised Labour for a fair pay structure. Finally, he expressed appreciation for workers' roles in economic growth.
