Otto Addo declares Benjamin Asare Ghana’s number one goalkeeper

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has named Benjamin Asare as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper. This decision follows Asare's strong performances in training and World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.

Asare, who plays for Hearts of Oak, kept two clean sheets in his first two games. After Ghana's 3-0 win over Madagascar, Addo confirmed Asare's position. He stated that the next game is months away but Asare is currently the preferred option.

Addo said, “At this point, the next game is in June. I think he [Benjamin Asare] is number one. We have decided on him. He did well in training.”

The coach noted that competition among goalkeepers remains fierce. Lawrence Ati Zigi and Joe Wollacott are also vying for a starting spot.

Addo explained, “There’s not a huge gap between him and the other goalkeepers. The goalkeepers are pushing each other, which is great.” He appreciated how Zigi and Wollacott supported Asare during training.

He praised Asare’s work ethic and performances in league matches. Addo said, “Big props to them for pushing him... this is really good teamwork. Benjamin deserved it.”

As Ghana continues their qualification campaign in June, Asare's status as the number one goalkeeper will be closely watched in the coming months.
