Nana Otuo Sereboe II, Juabenhene with Otumfuo
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor launched an Endowment Fund last Friday. This fund aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation.
The Fund is targeting GHc10 million initially. It expects to invest ₵50 million over five years. This investment will finance all the Foundation’s programs and projects.
The event also celebrated the Silver Jubilee of the Foundation. This milestone occurs on April 25, 2025. It coincides with the 26th anniversary of Barima Kwaku Duah's enstoolment as Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Otumfuo was enstooled on April 26, 1999. He succeeded the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II as King of Asante Kingdom. He is known for promoting peace, education, health, and economic development.
A year after his enstoolment, he established the Foundation. The goal was to improve lives through various projects in water, sanitation, health, culture, education, and entrepreneurship.
Over time, he expanded this vision into transformative projects across sectors. In 2009, he consolidated these efforts into the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation.
The Foundation has supported hundreds of thousands in education at secondary and tertiary levels. It is currently building a 700-bed girls' hostel for Sefwi Wiawso Senior High School.
In 2013, Otumfuo secured scholarships for Ghanaian students at the University of Memphis in the USA.
At the launch ceremony, Otumfuo noted that thousands received full scholarships. An additional 650 young people benefited from support packages covering fees and supplies.
“Our beneficiaries come from every region of Ghana,” he said. He shared stories of children who overcame despair to become professionals like teachers and doctors.
He highlighted achievements such as building over 740 school structures nationwide with World Bank support. This includes constructing classroom blocks and donating over 980,000 desks.
More than 1,000 schoolchildren received essential supplies like textbooks and computers. His Majesty thanked past and present Board members for their contributions.
He acknowledged partners and donors who support the Foundation's mission. They were presented with citations for their unwavering support.
Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II chairs the Board of Directors. He stated that this initiative would help meet growing scholarship demands.
“We receive many requests for scholarships and infrastructure support,” he noted. “This is crucial for achieving economic stability.”
Donors were categorized into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond based on contributions. They received certificates and plaques in recognition of their support.
Bronze contributors included Unijay and Fidelity Bank among others. Silver sponsors contributed GHC200,000 each; Gold sponsors contributed GHC300,000 each; Diamond sponsors contributed GHC500,000 each.
Dignitaries at the launch included Lady Julia Osei Tutu and former President Kufuor among others.
