Our boxes are not for crime - BoG distances itself from misuse of currency containers

Bank of Ghana (BoG) Bank of Ghana (BoG)

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has issued a disclaimer. This follows reports of misuse of its currency transport boxes. Some individuals are using these boxes for unrelated purposes, possibly involving criminal activity.

In a statement titled “Use and Misuse of Bank of Ghana Currency Transport Boxes,” the central bank clarified its position. The wooden boxes are durable and sometimes repurposed after official use. However, any suggestion that the Bank is linked to criminal activities is false and harmful.

“These boxes are robust and reusable,” the statement said. They can withstand wear and tear from logistics. Commercial banks often return them empty or find other uses for them.

Due to their durability, some people have repurposed these boxes for storage or transport. However, the Bank emphasized that any misuse, especially for criminal activities, is serious.

“The BoG cannot be associated with any misuse of these boxes,” it stated. Reports suggest some individuals are using these boxes to damage the Bank's reputation.

The central bank warned that such actions could harm its credibility. It insisted that law enforcement must act quickly against misuse.

“Misuse of such boxes for criminal activities must be thoroughly investigated,” the Bank stressed. All individuals found guilty should face prosecution.

In a time where visuals can lead to dangerous assumptions, the BoG wants to clarify: a reused currency box does not represent endorsement by the central bank.
