Our community has earned a reputation as a trusted arbiter – Mahama hails ECOWAS

President John Dramani Mahama praised the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He called it a pillar of stability and diplomacy in Africa. He recognized its long efforts in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

Mahama spoke at a ceremony in Accra. This event marked ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary. He highlighted ECOWAS’s role as a mediator during turbulent political times in West Africa.

“Through consistent engagements, dialogue, and mediation, our community has earned respect,” he said. He noted that ECOWAS is a trusted arbiter in conflict prevention and resolution.

Mahama reflected on ECOWAS’s achievements. He mentioned specific examples where its intervention preserved peace. “Whether restoring peace in Liberia or Sierra Leone, or guiding Gambia, ECOWAS has shown that African solutions work,” he emphasized.

Despite these successes, Mahama acknowledged new threats to peace and development. He stressed the need for ECOWAS to evolve further. “If [it] commits to refining itself against emerging challenges, it can build a stronger future,” he concluded.
