During a webinar hosted by the Centre for Alternative Politics and Security West Africa on November 22, 2024, Mary Awelana Addah, Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), analyzed Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.
She criticized the country’s stagnant 43% score on the Corruption Perception Index, attributing it to weak institutions, excessive executive power, and lack of transparency in campaign financing.
Addah highlighted the monetization of politics, where citizens trade votes for material gain, exacerbated by economic hardship.
She proposed reforms, including a transparent campaign financing system, stronger whistleblower protections, and amendments to the Criminal Offenses Code to address unexplained wealth.
Addah stressed the need for collaboration across sectors to effectively combat corruption and strengthen Ghana’s democracy.
