The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed that its personnel remain uninsured despite the high-risk nature of their work.
This was disclosed by ADO1 Alex Nartey during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
Nartey explained that fire personnel only receive basic workman’s compensation, applicable to all public sector workers, but even this requires them to use personal funds and later seek reimbursement with receipts.
He cited a recent incident where injured officers relied on GNFS leadership for financial support due to the lack of insurance.
Nartey also raised concerns about outdated fire engines, some over 20 years old. The newest engine in their fleet is already 14 years old, highlighting the urgent need for replacements.
He urged the government to prioritize insurance and modern equipment to ensure the safety and efficiency of GNFS personnel.
