Outgoing AfDB president visits Buhari, expresses gratitude for support

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), is nearing the end of his term this September. He recently visited former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to express his gratitude for years of support.

Buhari backed Adesina’s candidacy for the AfDB presidency. This nomination was originally made by former President Goodluck Jonathan. Buhari also supported Adesina during his re-election campaign in 2020.

Adesina thanked Buhari on social media after their meeting. He said, “He stood firmly by me during difficult times, which ensured my re-election.”

The main reason for Adesina’s visit was to personally thank Buhari for his support during both election campaigns.

Adesina recalled feeling like a “stranded candidate” when he first campaigned. He arranged to meet with then incoming President Buhari at that time.

During their recent meeting, Buhari reflected on their first encounter. He mentioned that he has always admired Adesina’s career and integrity. Despite Adesina's ties to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Buhari pledged full support for him.

“I always regard people as Nigerians first,” Buhari stated. “If they require assistance and are deserving, I support them on their merit.”

Buhari also congratulated Adesina on launching the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones initiative. This program is a flagship project under Adesina's leadership at the AfDB.
