The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised concerns about cyberbullying. This issue is linked to unregulated digital lending apps. There has been a sharp increase in complaints this year.
From January to May 2025, the CSA received 377 reports of abuse. In comparison, there were only 228 cases in 2024. The CSA attributes this surge to aggressive tactics used by mobile loan applications.
Many of these apps operate outside legal frameworks. They often push unsolicited microloans on users and then harass them for payments. Victims report being blackmailed and threatened with defamation.
Some have had their private data leaked to third parties. Apps access users’ phone data to shame them into repayment.
The CSA has identified 48 rogue apps operating in Ghana. Some of these include Milloan, Devtage Loan, Plus Cash Arrow, and FastyCredit.
“These apps lack legal backing and ignore consumer protection laws,” the CSA stated. Engaging with them poses serious risks like data breaches and financial loss.
The Authority urges Ghanaians to verify digital lending platforms before use. They should also report suspicious activity through its 24-hour cyber incident response system.
