P.K. Foundation Supports 37 Military Hospital in Fight Against TB

New TB Control Unit Office Inaugurated at 37 Military Hospital

A new Tuberculosis (TB) Control Unit Office has opened at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra. This initiative aims to reduce TB spread within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and nationwide.

The facility is located in the hospital’s Public Health Annex. It was established through a partnership between GAF Medical Services and Mr. Prosper Kwame Appiah, founder of the P.K. Foundation.

Brigadier General Evelyn Vivian Abraham-Kwabiah commissioned the new TB unit. She praised Mr. Appiah and the P.K. Foundation for their vital contributions.

Brig Gen Abraham-Kwabiah noted that this unit will enhance GAF’s TB campaign. It will provide quality screening, diagnosis, and treatment services.

“The TB Control Unit will improve our ability to identify cases early,” she said. “It will also ensure patients receive quality care during recovery.”

Captain (GN) Harriet Manu leads the hospital’s Public Health Division. She expressed gratitude for the support received for this initiative.

She emphasized public health's role in preventing diseases and improving life expectancy. “Investing in public health reduces overall healthcare costs,” she stated.

Last year, the hospital recorded 144 TB cases with an 80 percent recovery rate. However, many cases are reported late, which lowers recovery chances.

Mr. Appiah shared his personal honor in contributing to the fight against TB. He highlighted Ghana's alarming statistics: about 15,000 new cases and 4,100 deaths each year.

“It is heartbreaking to see lives cut short by a preventable disease,” he said. “This is my small contribution to a much larger battle.”

The inauguration ceremony included senior officers from the 37 Military Hospital and staff from the P.K. Foundation, along with other key health sector stakeholders.
