PPP backs Mahama’s suspension of CJ, urges respect for due process

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) supports the President's suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. They call this action lawful and consistent with the 1992 Constitution.

On April 28, the party issued a statement signed by Chairman Nana Ofori Owusu. The PPP emphasized that the President acted within constitutional limits. This followed a prima facie case and consultation with the Council of State.

The statement reiterated that the suspension was lawful and followed due process. The Chief Justice had a chance to respond to allegations against her. This procedure shows the President's respect for rule of law and human rights.

The PPP affirmed the supremacy of the Constitution. They cautioned against politicizing or undermining this process. The party criticized the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) for calling to suspend the Chief Justice’s suspension.

They argued that this contradicts constitutional order. The PPP warned that such calls threaten democratic accountability. They stressed that no one, including the Chief Justice, is above the Constitution.

Accountability must remain central to Ghana’s democracy, they stated. The party referenced the 2018 removal of the Electoral Commission Chairperson as an example of upheld processes.

In conclusion, they urged all stakeholders to stay calm and allow constitutional procedures to proceed without obstruction.
