PSWU threatens nationwide strike over delayed allowances

The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) has threatened a nationwide strike. This action will occur if the government does not pay overdue allowances. These payments are owed to staff at the Centre for National Culture (CNC) and other agencies. The delays began with the rollout of the Single Spine Pay Structure.

Union leaders say these allowances are vital for their work. They help promote culture and tourism in Ghana. The CNC plays a key role in showcasing Ghana's cultural heritage. It is a hub for arts, crafts, music, and dance.

During the 4th Quadrennial Divisional Delegates Conference in Kumasi, union leaders spoke out. Deputy General Secretary John Sampah warned that action is needed soon. He said failure to address this issue could lead workers to protest.

Sampah noted that CNC workers have not received their allowances yet. He mentioned a previous strike where they were told to wait until after elections. He urged the government to prioritize those still waiting for payments.

The Acting Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture also spoke at the conference. He highlighted the importance of promoting Ghana’s culture and tourism. He emphasized that initiatives like the Black Star Experience create jobs.

The conference theme was: “Resetting the Centres for National Culture for the Black Star Experience: The Role of the Union.”
