Professor Thomas Mba Akabzaa, the new Board Chairman of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has died. He was appointed by President John Dramani Mahama to lead the eight-member PURC Board.
Although he could not attend the swearing-in ceremony in person, he joined virtually. Prof. Akabzaa was officially inducted into office on March 28, 2025. His sudden passing has overshadowed this recent appointment.
The cause of death is not yet known. Family sources told Citi News that he died at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on April 17, 2025.
Before joining the PURC Board, Prof. Akabzaa had a strong academic background. He was a Professor in Earth Science at the University of Ghana. His research focused on mining, environment, and natural resources, earning him over 2,289 citations.
He authored two important books: "Boom and Dislocation" and "The Glittering Façade." These works significantly contributed to discussions about mining's effects in Ghana.
From 2011 to 2017, Prof. Akabzaa served as Chief Director at the Ministry of Energy. His leadership earned him recognition as Best Performing Chief Director in both 2013 and 2014.
He also held key roles such as Board Chairman of the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited. Additionally, he was a member of several professional associations locally and internationally.
