The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) held an emergency meeting on May 23, 2025. The meeting included the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo). They discussed ongoing electricity supply challenges and unplanned outages in parts of the country.
PURC initiated this meeting after monitoring consumer complaints. The goal was to understand the causes of recent power disruptions. They also aimed to assess operational challenges faced by utility providers. Coordinated measures were needed to restore and stabilize electricity supply.
Dr. Shafic Suleman, Executive Secretary of PURC, emphasized their mandate to protect consumers. He expressed concern about frequent power outages in some regions. “This meeting is crucial for identifying causes and taking urgent actions,” he stated.
During the meeting, GRIDCo, ECG, and NEDCo shared details about their difficulties. These included long feeders, inadequate Bulk Supply Points (BSPs), and tampering with the Electricity Network. Other issues were overload on system components, overgrown vegetation, and weather effects.
After the briefings, PURC directed utilities to submit comprehensive reports. These reports should cover current challenges and immediate mitigation measures. Long-term plans to prevent future issues are also required. The Commission stressed improved communication with the public during disruptions for transparency.
PURC will enforce strict compliance with performance standards for reliable electricity supply nationwide. They encourage consumers to report any local utility service challenges.
The Commission remains committed to protecting both consumers and utility providers. They will continue monitoring the power situation to ensure quality service delivery.
