PURC justifies tariff hikes, says measures not against consumer interests

Dr. Eric Kofi Obutey is the Director of Research and Corporate Affairs at the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC). He defended the Commission's recent tariff adjustments. He stated these changes did not harm consumers.

PURC announced a 14.75% increase in electricity tariffs. Water tariffs also rose by 4.02% for all consumers. These adjustments are part of the quarterly tariff review for early 2025.

In an interview on Eyewitness News, Dr. Obutey explained why these increases were necessary. Several economic factors influenced this decision, including exchange rates and inflation projections. Fuel costs, especially natural gas, also played a role.

He noted that minor tariff changes do not require public consultations. The PURC uses standard parameters to ensure rates reflect current economic conditions.

A major tariff review is expected next quarter. This review will consider capital and operational expenses. However, Dr. Obutey could not confirm if prices would rise or fall.

He mentioned that future tariff changes depend on various factors at play. The PURC aims to balance utility provider needs with consumer interests.
