The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) held an emergency meeting on May 23, 2025. The meeting included the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
This meeting addressed ongoing electricity supply challenges and unplanned outages in parts of the country. PURC initiated the meeting after monitoring consumer complaints. The goal was to understand the causes of recent power disruptions.
Dr. Shafic Suleman, Executive Secretary of PURC, emphasized consumer protection. He expressed concern about frequent power outages in some regions. He stated that identifying causes and taking corrective actions is crucial.
During the meeting, GRIDCo, ECG, and NEDCo shared details about their operational difficulties. These included long feeders, inadequate Bulk Supply Points (BSPs), and network tampering. Other issues were system overloads, overgrown vegetation, and weather effects.
After the briefings, PURC directed utilities to submit comprehensive reports. These reports should cover current challenges and immediate solutions. Long-term plans to prevent future issues are also required.
The Commission stressed improved communication with the public during disruptions. This aims to enhance transparency and build public confidence. PURC will enforce strict compliance with performance standards for reliable electricity supply.
Consumers are encouraged to report any utility service challenges in their areas. The Commission remains committed to protecting both consumers and utility providers. They will continue monitoring the power situation to ensure quality service delivery.
