PUWU mounts nationwide protest against privatization of ECG and NEDCo

Tension is rising across the country. Members of the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) are opposing government plans. The government wants private sector involvement in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

In a bold protest, red flags are now at all 92 district offices. They are also at 14 regional administrative centers nationwide. This protest follows Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson’s announcement. He confirmed that Cabinet approved this controversial move.

At the Volta River Authority (VRA) and ECG headquarters in Accra, workers are agitated. Red cloths cover signposts, and protest banners hang at the entrance. Security personnel noted early signs of protest to Citi News.

They expect demonstrations to grow from Monday, April 28. Workers plan to wear red armbands and take further actions. PUWU is concerned about how this decision will affect workers’ conditions.

They fear it could harm overall management of Ghana’s electricity distribution. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) warns that ECG privatization will raise tariffs and cost jobs.
