Ghana’s electricity sector is experiencing unrest. The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) opposes government plans for private sector involvement. This affects the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
Workers are displaying red flags at all 92 district offices and 14 regional centers. Their protest began quietly but intensified after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced Cabinet approval for the proposal.
The Electro Volta House in Accra is the center of agitation. It houses the headquarters of the Volta River Authority (VRA) and ECG. Protest banners and red cloths are visible on signposts, signaling workers' readiness for more actions.
Security officers confirmed to Citi News that larger demonstrations will start on Monday, April 28. Workers plan to wear red armbands and hold symbolic protests.
PUWU warns that private management could harm workers’ conditions and disrupt electricity distribution. Union leaders state this protest is just the beginning. They promise to increase pressure until the government reconsiders its decision.
