Parliament's Agric Committee chair leads delegation to 10th Our Ocean Conference in South Korea

Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of Parliament’s Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs Committee, led a Ghanaian delegation to the 10th 'Our Ocean Conference' in Busan, South Korea.

He was accompanied by Emelia Arthur, Ghana’s Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development.

This year's conference theme was “Our Ocean, Our Action.” It aimed to promote sustainable ocean governance globally.

A major topic was Digital Oceans. This initiative combines digital technology with ocean industries to protect marine resources.

Dr. Jasaw took part in panel discussions and side events. He engaged with global stakeholders to attract investment and foster partnerships. These efforts aim to enhance the sustainability of Ghana’s ocean and inland water fisheries.

A key moment was a meeting with U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, Senator John Kerry. They discussed boosting Ghana’s sustainable fisheries efforts and addressing illegal fishing practices.

Dr. Jasaw also met Charlina Vitcheva, Director-General of the European Commission for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. Their conversation focused on the EU's yellow card warning regarding IUU fishing in Ghana.

Dr. Jasaw assured her of ongoing reforms in transparency and enforcement of sanctions. Dr. Vitcheva expressed satisfaction with these efforts and promised to help reverse the yellow card warning.

The Government of Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to the Transparency Charter through its Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development. They plan to incorporate insights from the conference into national policy for better ocean governance.

The Our Ocean Conference continues to be a platform for nations to commit to protecting oceans and ensuring sustainable marine resource use for future generations.
