Parliament has approved GH₵2.8 billion for road maintenance this year. This funding aims to improve the transport of goods and services.
In 2024, 43 percent of the country's roads were maintained. Maintenance included re-shaping, gravelling, and patching potholes.
Isaac Adjei Mensah chairs Parliament's Roads and Transport Committee. He informed the media that road maintenance is part of the government's agenda.
The government inherited a total debt of GH₵105 billion in the road sector. There is also a GH₵109 billion commitment to road contractors.
This commitment includes ongoing projects, stalled projects, and signed contracts.
Mr. Adjei Mensah mentioned plans to reintroduce road tolls using technology. This move aims to boost government revenue.
He is optimistic about the government's US$10 billion infrastructure agenda called "Big Push." This initiative should improve road conditions across the country.
On March 29, Parliament passed the Appropriation Bill early Saturday morning. This bill allows Ghana's Finance Minister to spend public funds on proposed programs.
The government can now access funds from the Consolidated Fund and other sources.
