First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has given advice to the Minority. He suggested they seek legal action regarding Chairman Wontumi's detention.
Chairman Wontumi is the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He is currently held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). His arrest involves charges of fraud, money laundering, and organized crime. The Attorney General’s Department confirmed his arrest.
The Minority staged a walkout in Parliament. They protested what they call unfair treatment and political bias. Later, they held a sit-down protest at EOCO’s headquarters on May 29, 2025.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized EOCO’s case handling. He vowed to resist until justice is served. He also urged the Majority side to show solidarity.
He said, “I pray that my colleagues will support this.” He wants Parliament to unite in demanding fairness for Chairman Wontumi.
Deputy Speaker Ahiafor warned against interfering with law enforcement agencies. He emphasized that Parliament cannot review bail conditions set by investigators.
He stated, “This matter can be addressed by the judiciary.” If someone finds bail conditions excessive, they should go to court, not Parliament.
Ahiafor called for due process and respect for institutional boundaries in seeking justice.
